Math

Another chapter goes into the record books. Students took the Chapter 9 test today and ROCKED it! We will go back and work on Chapter 8 (Geometry) next. In case you have not been made aware- HFS will be adopting an entirely new and exciting math curriculum beginning next year. It is called Math In Focus. It is a comprehensive program that will be implemented in grades K-5. Teachers will be attending a three day training workshop in July to learn how to implement the program. If you would like more information on Math In Focus you can go to their website and browse. Teachers will be able to provide you with much more information in September.

Writing

Poetry has been our writing focus for the last couple of weeks. We have been reading, responding to, and visualizing all kinds of poetry. Students have had mini lessons on composing the following types of poetry:
acrostic, shape poetry, cinquain, diamante, couplet, autobiographical, and haiku. We will be doing several fun activities that will showcase our poetry knowledge for our guests on Grandparents' Day. During the last few weeks of school we will continue to flex our writing muscles by writing in journals, writing to respond to literature, using writing prompts, and writing friendly letters. In addition, we will be focusing on grammar.

Literature

Believe it or not we have just finished our EIGHTH novel study! Students are now working on independent novel studies! This is a BIG deal for them. Each student has chosen a novel to read in class and a different novel study to complete as they read. I am so proud of their progress!

Science/Social Studies

We will be working on our water study this week with the help of a cool website called Mystery Science. It includes learning and exploring science topics by various methods including hands-on experiments. We are excited to try it. We will also take a closer look at the Mexican holiday called Cinco de Mayo.
